Greece and Turkey on High Alert as Severe Rainfall and Flooding Threaten Central and Western Regions

Authorities in Greece and Turkey have issued severe rainfall and flooding warnings as a low-pressure system fuels powerful thunderstorms across south-eastern Europe. Central Greece and western Turkey are expected to receive 100–150mm (4–6in) of rain this week, with locally higher totals possible. The warnings follow a deadly tornado in Antalya, Turkey, on Tuesday that killed four construction workers, underscoring the storm system's intensity. The combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds raises the risk of flash floods, infrastructure damage, and travel disruptions in affected areas. Meanwhile, Cyclone Arnab has made landfall in India's Odisha and Andhra Pradesh regions, bringing wind gusts over 85mph (140km/h) and rainfall exceeding 200mm, forcing more than 180,000 people to evacuate. As the cyclone weakens and moves northward, it will continue to deliver heavy rain to northern and central India. These simultaneous extreme weather events highlight the growing vulnerability of coastal and low-lying regions to severe storms. Residents in the warned areas should monitor local updates and prepare for potential flooding and power outages in the coming days.
