Florida GOP Congressman Urges White House to Reconsider Haitian Deportation Plan

Florida Republican Congressman Carlos Giménez has publicly urged the White House to reconsider its plan to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian migrants. Disagreeing with the Trump administration's stance, Giménez, a Miami Cuban exile, warned that repatriating an estimated 350,000 Haitians to their home country would be a serious misstep. He explicitly described Haiti as a "failed state," emphasizing its "chaotic, dangerous" conditions. This intervention follows a US Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the Trump administration's authority to terminate these temporary legal protections. Giménez stressed that forcing such a large number of individuals to return to Haiti's unstable situation would constitute a "grave error." This position from a Republican figure, especially one representing a district with strong immigrant community ties, highlights internal party divisions on a crucial immigration policy. His advocacy underscores the significant humanitarian concerns associated with the proposed deportation plan, calling for a re-evaluation to prevent further destabilization.
