Almost $20m raised to protect Wooroora station, a 20,000-hectare Queensland haven for endangered species

Bush Heritage Australia has raised over $19 million in private donations to purchase Wooroora station, a 20,000-hectare cattle property in far north Queensland, with hopes to complete the acquisition by Christmas. Located about 100km south-west of Cairns on Jirrbal country, Wooroora is a largely intact landscape of wet sclerophyll forest and savanna woodland, linking the wet tropics and world heritage rainforest. Its headwaters flow to the Great Barrier Reef, making the property ecologically significant beyond its borders. The station is home to 12 endangered species and sits adjacent to Bush Heritage’s existing 43,575-hectare Yourka Reserve, creating a connected conservation corridor in one of Australia’s most biodiverse regions. Protecting Wooroora would secure critical habitat and water systems, safeguarding a 'worldwide legacy' for future generations.
