Harley-Davidson’s Electric Bike Brand LiveWire Warns of ‘Substantial Doubt’ About Its Future

LiveWire, the electric motorcycle division spun off from Harley-Davidson, has issued a stark warning that it faces “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue as a going concern. The company, which went public via a SPAC merger in 2022, cited ongoing financial difficulties and insufficient liquidity in its latest regulatory filing. LiveWire reported a net loss of $110 million for 2024, with revenue of just $26 million from the sale of 612 electric motorcycles. Despite backing from Harley-Davidson and a strategic partnership with Taiwanese scooter maker Kymco, the brand has struggled to gain traction in a competitive EV market. The warning underscores the challenges facing legacy manufacturers as they pivot to electric mobility amid cooling consumer demand and high development costs. Investors reacted sharply, sending shares down over 20% in after-hours trading. LiveWire says it is exploring options including additional financing, cost reductions, or a possible sale. The company’s fate will be a key test for the viability of electric motorcycles in the U.S. market.
