Duke Lands Five-Star 2027 Wing Asa Montgomery Over UNC, Boosting Jon Scheyer’s Recruiting Dominance

Duke basketball secured a major recruiting victory on Tuesday as five-star wing Asa Montgomery announced his commitment to the Blue Devils over archrival North Carolina. Montgomery, one of the top prospects in the 2027 class, chose Duke after visiting several high-major programs, giving head coach Jon Scheyer yet another elite addition to his future roster. The 6-foot-7 forward is known for his scoring versatility, defensive length, and high basketball IQ, making him a cornerstone piece for Duke’s long-term plans. His decision continues a trend of Duke beating UNC for top-tier talent under Scheyer, further intensifying the rivalry on the recruiting trail. Montgomery becomes the second five-star commitment in Duke’s 2027 class, signaling that the Blue Devils remain a national powerhouse in talent acquisition. For North Carolina, losing out on a priority in-state target is a significant blow, especially given the program’s efforts to rebuild its wing depth. With Montgomery on board, Duke’s future looks even brighter, and the pressure now shifts to UNC to respond with a marquee addition of its own.
