UN Biodiversity CoP 17 in Yerevan: How Universities Can Turn Science into Action for Global Nature Goals

As the UN Biodiversity Conference 2026 (CoP 17) wraps up in Yerevan, Armenia, under the theme 'Taking Action for Nature,' a new analysis of African national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) reveals a clear but underused pathway for academic and research institutions to drive real-world conservation outcomes. The study shows that universities are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between scientific evidence and on-the-ground implementation of global biodiversity targets, yet they remain largely absent from formal national planning processes. By aligning research agendas with country-level priorities, providing technical capacity, and monitoring progress, higher education institutions can help governments meet commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The findings highlight that without stronger engagement from the academic sector, many NBSAPs risk remaining aspirational documents rather than actionable roadmaps. For nations across Africa and beyond, integrating universities into biodiversity governance could accelerate the translation of data into decisions—and decisions into measurable protection for ecosystems. The takeaway: the next decade of nature recovery depends not only on policy ambition but on mobilizing the scientific workforce already embedded in every country.
