NIH and NASA Launch QuSAFE Challenge to Advance Quantum Sensing for Safer Drug Testing

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and NASA have teamed up to launch the Quantum-Enabled Predictive Preclinical NAMs for Toxicity and Safety (QuSAFE) Challenge. This initiative aims to apply quantum-enabled sensing to in vitro new approach methodologies (NAMs), including organoids and microphysiological systems (MPS), to improve drug safety testing while reducing reliance on animal models. By integrating quantum sensors with these advanced biological platforms, the challenge seeks to enhance the sensitivity and accuracy of preclinical toxicity assessments. This collaboration highlights the growing role of quantum technologies in biomedical research and their potential to transform drug development pipelines. Ultimately, the QuSAFE Challenge could accelerate the adoption of human-relevant testing methods, leading to safer therapeutics and more efficient regulatory review.
