Japan's ALS Community Ready to Partner in Research, Nationwide Survey Finds

A nationwide survey in Japan reveals that people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and their families are eager to contribute to research, even though most have never heard of patient and public involvement (PPI). The study, published in Research Involvement and Engagement on Oct. 30, 2026, found strong willingness to participate in activities such as setting research priorities, reviewing study designs, and disseminating results. This matters because PPI can make research more relevant and impactful for patients, yet it remains underutilized in Japan's ALS field. The findings suggest a significant opportunity to bridge the gap between researchers and the ALS community, fostering collaboration that could accelerate progress toward better treatments and care. As Japan's aging population faces rising neurodegenerative disease burdens, integrating patient voices into research could become a crucial strategy for advancing ALS science.
