Deep-Sea Neutrino Telescope Tests Einstein's Relativity in the Mediterranean

An international team using the KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino telescope at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea has tested a cornerstone of Einstein's theory of relativity: Lorentz invariance, the principle that the laws of physics are the same everywhere. Analyzing 5,828 atmospheric neutrino candidates, researchers searched for signs that neutrinos behave differently depending on their direction or energy, which would hint at new physics beyond the Standard Model. The study, conducted by the KM3NeT collaboration, found no evidence of violation, setting stringent constraints on theories that attempt to unify gravity with quantum mechanics. This result reinforces our confidence in relativity and narrows the possibilities for quantum gravity models. As the KM3NeT detectors expand, future data will push these tests even further, probing the universe's most fundamental symmetries from the deep sea.
