CRISPR Gene Boost Reduces Seizures and Strengthens Muscles in Mice

A new compact CRISPR system developed by Hainan Zhang and colleagues at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences, could offer a way to treat genetic diseases by boosting the activity of existing genes. The system fits instructions for targeting multiple genes into a single viral delivery package, overcoming a major delivery hurdle. In mice, the approach reduced seizures and increased muscle strength, suggesting potential for conditions like Dravet syndrome and muscular dystrophy. The findings point to a future where gene activation, not just gene editing, becomes a viable therapeutic strategy.
