Phony Hulu Review: Nick Paley’s Mystery-Comedy Is a Gripping, Enjoyable Ride

Hulu’s new series Phony, created by Nick Paley, blends mystery-thriller tension with high school comedy in a way that feels fresh and instantly addictive. The show follows a teenage protagonist who wakes up in a hospital with no memory of who he is, only to discover that everyone around him seems to be lying. As he pieces together his identity, the series balances sharp humor with genuine suspense, keeping viewers guessing while also delivering laugh-out-loud moments. Paley’s writing is clever, and the young cast brings emotional depth to a story that could easily have felt gimmicky. What makes Phony stand out is its ability to juggle tones without losing momentum—each episode ends on a cliffhanger that makes it hard not to hit ‘next episode.’ For fans of shows like Only Murders in the Building or Veronica Mars, Phony offers a similarly satisfying mix of wit and intrigue. With its strong pacing and charismatic leads, this is one mystery worth solving.
