David Oyelowo and Hayley Atwell Reinvent Long John Silver and Trelawney in New Treasure Island Adaptation

A new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 classic Treasure Island is set to offer fresh takes on two of the novel’s most iconic characters. David Oyelowo stars as Long John Silver, while Hayley Atwell takes on the role of Squire Trelawney, a character traditionally portrayed as a bumbling aristocrat. The series reimagines both roles with greater depth and nuance, moving beyond the one-dimensional portrayals of past versions. Oyelowo’s Silver is expected to be a more complex and morally ambiguous figure, while Atwell’s Trelawney is redefined as a capable and intelligent woman, breaking from the novel’s original depiction. The changes reflect a broader trend in modern adaptations to update classic stories for contemporary audiences, ensuring the 143-year-old tale remains relevant. By diversifying and deepening these characters, the production aims to attract both longtime fans and new viewers. The series promises to honor the spirit of Stevenson’s adventure while offering a bold reinterpretation that speaks to today’s viewers.
