Ben Affleck Stars in Netflix's Upcoming Crime Thriller 'The Last Thing He Wanted' — Release Date and Trailer Details Revealed

Netflix has unveiled a gripping new trailer for Ben Affleck’s upcoming crime thriller, *The Last Thing He Wanted*, marking a high-stakes return to the screen for the acclaimed actor and filmmaker. Set to premiere globally on Netflix in early 2024, the film follows Affleck as a disillusioned journalist drawn into a dangerous web of espionage and political intrigue, based on Joan Didion’s acclaimed novel of the same name. The trailer, packed with tense pacing, shadowy conspiracies, and emotional depth, highlights Affleck’s intense performance and the film’s atmospheric tension, signaling a bold shift from his recent superhero roles. With production led by Amazon Studios and distributed by Netflix, the project underscores a growing trend of streaming platforms investing in literary adaptations with star power. The story centers on a woman torn between loyalty to her father, a powerful intelligence operative, and her own moral compass—themes that resonate amid ongoing global debates about surveillance, truth, and national security. Critics and fans alike are eager to see how director Anne Fletcher brings Didion’s complex narrative to life, especially given her track record with emotionally layered dramas. The film also features an ensemble cast including Anne Hathaway and Willem Dafoe, adding further weight to its cultural significance. Why it matters: As streaming services compete for premium content, *The Last Thing He Wanted* exemplifies the push toward original, high-concept thrillers with literary roots and A-list talent. Its release is anticipated not just for entertainment value but as a cultural moment reflecting current anxieties around misinformation and authority. For audiences, it offers a rare blend of intellectual depth and cinematic suspense. With Affleck at the helm, this one could redefine the genre on the platform.
