8 MCU Characters the Movies Nerfed: From Hulk to Thanos

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a power-scaling problem. In order to keep stories balanced, the films have quietly downgraded some of Marvel's most formidable heroes and villains. Characters like Hulk, Thor, and even Thanos have been significantly weaker on screen than their comic book counterparts suggest. Hulk, once capable of shattering planets, often gets knocked out by a single punch from Thanos in Infinity War. Thor, despite being the God of Thunder, has had his power levels fluctuate wildly across films. Meanwhile, Thanos without the Infinity Stones is still a cosmic-level threat in the comics, but in the MCU he relies heavily on the stones to achieve his goals. Other characters like Drax, Vision, and Ultron also suffer from this nerfing. Drax, who was created to kill Thanos, is reduced to comic relief. Vision, an android with the Mind Stone, is taken out too easily in Infinity War. Ultron, a world-ending AI, is defeated in a single film. This power scaling matters because it affects stakes and character credibility. When characters are inconsistently powerful, audiences lose a sense of tension. Going forward, the MCU must find a balance between storytelling needs and respecting the source material's power levels, especially with cosmic entities like Galactus and the Celestials on the horizon.
