6 Detective Shows Better Than True Detective: From Mindhunter to The Wire

For years, True Detective has been a benchmark for prestige crime television, but several series have arguably surpassed it in depth, character, and social commentary. Mindhunter, with its chilling exploration of criminal psychology, and Mare of Easttown, featuring Kate Winslet's raw performance, are among the standouts. These shows go beyond procedural formulas, delving into the human cost of crime. But the crown belongs to The Wire, often called the greatest TV series ever made. Created by David Simon, it examines Baltimore's drug trade from multiple perspectives—police, dealers, schools, media, and government—revealing systemic failure. Why it matters: these series redefine the detective genre, using crime as a lens for broader societal issues. They offer more than whodunits; they ask why. If you're seeking television that challenges and resonates, these six titles are essential viewing. The bar has been raised.
