Does Toothpaste Work for Spots? Dermatologist Warns It May Worsen Acne

The popular home remedy of applying toothpaste to pimples may do more harm than good, according to Dr Rosalind Simpson, consultant dermatologist and associate professor at the University of Nottingham. While toothpaste can dry out a spot due to ingredients like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol, it is not designed for facial skin and can cause irritation, redness, and even chemical burns. Simpson explains that acne develops from blocked pores, excess sebum, and changes in Cutibacterium acnes bacteria, and toothpaste does not address these underlying causes. Instead, she recommends proven over-the-counter treatments such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which target bacteria and unclog pores without the harsh side effects. For persistent or severe acne, seeing a dermatologist is advised. As awareness grows about the risks of DIY skincare, experts urge consumers to choose science-backed solutions over viral hacks.
