Merck and Moderna’s mRNA Cancer Vaccine Shows Promise at ESMO 2024

Merck and Moderna’s investigational mRNA cancer vaccine, mRNA-4157 (V940), demonstrated encouraging results in patients with high-risk melanoma, according to data presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) annual meeting. The vaccine, combined with Merck’s immunotherapy Keytruda, reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 44% compared to Keytruda alone in a Phase 2b trial. This marks a significant step for personalized cancer vaccines, which are designed to target unique mutations in each patient’s tumor. The companies have already initiated Phase 3 trials, and if successful, this could become the first mRNA cancer vaccine to reach the market, potentially transforming adjuvant therapy for melanoma and other cancers. The data highlights the growing role of mRNA technology beyond infectious diseases, with both companies investing heavily in this new therapeutic class.
