Scam Site Exploits AO3 Outage by Selling Fake Fanfic Audiobooks

A fraudulent website is attempting to profit from the recent Archive of Our Own (AO3) outage by claiming to sell audiobook versions of fanfiction. The scam site, which has not been named, appears to be targeting fans eager to access their favorite stories while the popular fanfiction platform remains down. AO3, operated by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), is currently taking steps to address the issue, including warning users about the fraudulent operation. This incident highlights the risks fans face during service disruptions, as scammers exploit high demand and user frustration. The fake audiobook site likely aims to collect payment or personal information from unsuspecting users. AO3 has not authorized any third-party sales of fanfiction audiobooks, and fanfiction is generally non-commercial due to copyright concerns. The OTW is working to restore service and protect its community from such scams. Fans should be cautious and only access content through official AO3 channels. As the outage continues, vigilance is key to avoiding financial loss and data theft.
