Rockstar North Developers Vote on Historic UK Union Recognition Amid GTA 6 Launch

Workers at Rockstar North, the Edinburgh-based lead developer of the highly anticipated GTA 6, will vote from November 12–26 on whether to recognize the IWGB Union at Rockstar. If approved, it would become the largest union in the UK video game sector, giving employees a stronger voice on pay, overtime, generative AI policies, work-from-home arrangements, and layoffs. The vote overlaps with GTA 6's release on November 19, and comes as an employment tribunal over the dismissal of more than 30 union members concludes with final arguments on November 17–18. Rockstar claims the staff were fired for leaking game details, while the union alleges retaliation for organizing. Union committee member Shanti Easton-Steel said the vote gives workers the chance to 'make gaming history,' noting that management decisions are often hidden, leaving issues like the gender pay gap and job security unaddressed. IWGB president Alex Marshall called the vote 'just as historic as the game release.' Rockstar publishing boss Jennifer Kolbe has stated, 'We go where the team goes,' indicating management may accept the outcome. Unionization in gaming is rare but growing, as seen in the recent contract for over 1,900 Blizzard workers at Microsoft. A successful vote at Rockstar could inspire a wider push across the industry.
