Gears of War: E-Day’s $500M Budget Reportedly Covers Years of Unreal Engine 5 Support for Xbox, Not Just One Game

The Coalition’s work on Gears of War: E-Day reportedly cost around $500 million, but Windows Central’s Jez Corden says that figure reflects years of the studio serving as a technical Swiss Army Knife for Xbox, not just a single game’s production. Sources say The Coalition helped Epic Games with Unreal Engine 5 demos like The Matrix Awakens and Alpha Point, then assisted Xbox Game Studios teams on titles including Avowed, Hellblade 2, Clockwork Revolution, State of Decay 3, Grounded, and even Blizzard’s StarCraft. The studio also spent over 18 months on a canceled prototype before Mike Crump became studio head and full production on Gears of War: E-Day began. Corden suggests the half-billion-dollar figure may be circulated internally to justify potential cuts or studio closure, though he has not heard of such plans. The game’s sales have been questioned, but it launched only on PC and Xbox Series X|S, is available via Game Pass, and faced stiff competition from a crowded release calendar. Circana’s Mat Piscatella noted exclusivity hasn’t driven console sales. The Coalition’s deep Unreal Engine 5 expertise remains a strategic asset for Xbox’s future.
