Call of Duty Movie Will Explore the 'Cost of War,' Says Director Peter Berg

Director Peter Berg says the upcoming Call of Duty film, based on the Modern Warfare universe, will go beyond mindless action to examine the 'cost of war' and the burden carried by soldiers. In an interview with ComicBook, Berg emphasized that characters like Captain Price, Soap, Ghost, and Alex are 'complicated humans' with nuanced storylines, not cartoonish heroes. 'There’s a real soul to the Modern Warfare universe,' he said, promising a film with 'a very strong soul, and consequence of war.' Berg, known for Lone Survivor and Patriots Day, is teaming with writer Taylor Sheridan, whose credits include Sicario and the TV series Lioness, to bring that depth to the big screen. The movie is set for release in June 2028 from Skydance, now part of Warner Bros. Discovery, and arrives as the latest game, Modern Warfare 4, just launched on October 23. With a Battlefield movie also in the works, military shooters are poised to become Hollywood’s next big battleground—but Berg’s take aims for substance over spectacle.
