BioShock Movie Still in Development at Netflix, Director Francis Lawrence Calls It a 'Tough Nut to Crack'

The long-gestating BioShock movie at Netflix is still alive, but director Francis Lawrence admits the adaptation remains a challenge. In a new interview with The Direct, Lawrence confirmed he is 'definitely active' on the project, but says translating the acclaimed video game series to film is 'a tough nut to crack.' He noted the difficulty of creating a protagonist from scratch, since players embody the character in the game, and described the world as 'pretty batsh** in a most amazing way.' Lawrence said the team is 'getting close,' but the film's future is clouded by recent executive changes at Netflix. Former film chief Dan Lin, who scaled back the project's budget, and content head Bela Bajaria have both left the company, with Peter Rice now serving as chief content officer. Lawrence hopes the shakeup won't derail the movie, but acknowledged, 'nothing is ever certain in Hollywood.' The director is currently finishing The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, due in November, and said BioShock could be his next project, but 'you never know.' Producer Roy Lee previously hinted the movie might tie in with a new BioShock game, though no title or release date has been announced. For now, fans must wait and see if this iconic dystopia ever reaches the screen.
