American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns Deserve a Modern Console Revival

The gaming industry has a habit of leaving masterpieces behind, and two of its darkest gems—American McGee’s Alice and its sequel Alice: Madness Returns—remain trapped on aging hardware. Developed by Spicy Horse and published by Electronic Arts, these twisted takes on Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland earned cult status for their haunting art direction, psychological depth, and unflinching storytelling. Yet today, players can only revisit them via dusty Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 discs, or a PC port that’s increasingly difficult to run on modern systems. That’s a disservice to both the creators and a new generation of gamers hungry for bold, narrative-driven experiences. A remaster or even a simple re-release on current platforms like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch would not only preserve gaming history but also prove that there’s still a market for mature, fairy-tale horror. After all, in an era dominated by remakes and nostalgia, why should Alice be left in the dark? It’s time for EA to unlock the rabbit hole once more.
