Netflix Lands Joel Coen’s Gothic Mystery ‘Jack of Spades’ Starring Josh O’Connor and Patsy Ferran for Fall 2027

Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to Joel Coen’s gothic mystery “Jack of Spades,” with a planned fall 2027 theatrical release ahead of its streaming debut. The film stars Josh O’Connor and Patsy Ferran, with a screenplay by Eleanor Catton, Joel and Ethan Coen, and Conor McPherson, adapted from Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel “The Alien: A Story of Middle Age.” This marks another high-profile literary adaptation for the streamer, following its strategy of pairing prestige filmmakers with global distribution. The story’s gothic atmosphere and period setting align with Coen’s signature darkly comic and visually rich style, likely drawing both awards attention and subscriber interest. For Netflix, securing a Coen brothers project underscores its commitment to theatrical-quality originals. The fall 2027 release window positions the film for festival season and awards campaigns. With O’Connor’s rising profile and Coen’s acclaimed track record, “Jack of Spades” could become a major cultural event when it debuts.
