Karim Akalay’s Ji.hlava Winner ‘6TM’ Blends Magic and Anti-Social Realism in Brussels Housing Estate

Karim Akalay’s project “6TM” has won the New Visions Award at the Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival, recognizing the most promising European project. Set during a scorching summer at Brussels’ largest housing estate, Cité Modèle, the story weaves three intertwining narratives within one family. Two kids chase a magic key to prevent an unspecified catastrophe, while other family members grapple with the harsh realities of life in the estate. Akalay describes his approach as “anti-social realism,” mixing magical elements with a grounded portrayal of collective struggle. The film emphasizes collective strength over individual heroism, reflecting the communal spirit of Cité Modèle’s residents. This award highlights the growing interest in hybrid documentary forms and socially engaged storytelling from emerging European filmmakers. Akalay’s vision promises a fresh take on urban life, blending fantasy with the raw texture of a marginalized community.
