Japan’s Anime Industry Hits Record $28.18BN in 2025, Overseas Sales Drive 57% of Revenue

Japan’s animation industry reached a new high of $28.18 billion (JPY4.45 trillion) in 2025, a 15.8% jump from the previous year, according to data from the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) presented at TIFFCOM, the content trade fair affiliated with the Tokyo International Film Festival. The growth was fueled by both domestic and international markets, but overseas revenue was the dominant force, climbing to $16.1 billion (JPY2.54 trillion) and representing nearly 57% of total industry earnings. Domestic sales contributed $12 billion, underscoring the sector’s dual engine. The overseas surge reflects the global appetite for Japanese anime, driven by streaming platforms, theatrical releases, and merchandise licensing in major markets like North America, China, and Europe. Industry analysts point to blockbuster franchises and the growing acceptance of anime in mainstream entertainment as key factors. The AJA report highlights how Japanese studios have successfully expanded their reach through co-productions and direct distribution deals, reducing reliance on traditional broadcast models. For investors and creators, the record numbers signal a structural shift: international fans are no longer a niche audience but the primary growth driver. Domestic revenue remains stable, but the overseas share has steadily risen from around 46% a decade ago to 57% today, a trend that is reshaping how studios budget, market, and even storyboard content with global appeal in mind. As the industry heads into 2026, all eyes are on whether this momentum can be sustained amid rising production costs and competition from other animation hubs. The TIFFCOM presentation sets a bullish tone for licensing negotiations and new project announcements in the coming year.
