Chinese Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Variant’ Secures North America, Europe, Asia Deals at TIFFCOM

Chinese sci-fi action thriller “Variant,” directed by Qilin Li, has landed key distribution deals across North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. International Media Network (IMN) acquired U.S. and Canadian rights, while MT Trading took multiple European territories. Sales agent Cappu Films announced the agreements at TIFFCOM, the market of the Tokyo International Film Festival, signaling strong global appetite for Chinese genre cinema. The film’s high-concept premise and visual effects have drawn comparisons to Hollywood blockbusters, positioning it as a potential crossover hit. As Chinese sci-fi continues to gain international traction following hits like “The Wandering Earth,” “Variant” could further open doors for Chinese filmmakers in Western markets. With deals now in place, audiences worldwide may soon see the film in theaters or on streaming platforms.
