Kengo Kuma Unveils Striking Contemporary Entrance for Historic Angers Cathedral

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma's studio has completed a new concrete entrance for Angers Cathedral in France, a historic landmark of Angevin Gothic architecture. Opened this month, the design features a series of five arched openings within a simple rectangular form. This contemporary addition serves a dual purpose: providing a sheltered, accessible gateway and acting as a gallery space to protect and frame the cathedral's original, intricately sculpted west doorway. Kuma's signature approach of sensitive integration and refined materiality is evident, using textured concrete to create a dialogue with the ancient stone. The project thoughtfully balances the need for modern functionality with profound respect for the cathedral's 12th-century heritage, offering a harmonious blend of old and new. This intervention enhances the visitor experience by allowing closer appreciation of historical artistry while ensuring preservation, setting a precedent for future heritage site renovations.
