Deccan Earth Meets Modernity: Iki Builds Unveils "Cascading" Vaulted Home in South India

In South India, the architectural studio Iki Builds has designed Aurva Illam, a unique residence that deeply integrates with its environment. Inspired by the Deccan Plateau, the home utilizes a palette of rammed earth, local stone, and terracotta tiles, reflecting the rugged landscape. The name "Aurva Illam" itself signifies a dwelling intrinsically connected to the earth. The design features cascading vaulted spaces that follow the natural topography, enhancing natural ventilation and thermal comfort. This project champions vernacular building techniques and local materials, offering a sustainable and contextually sensitive model for contemporary architecture. By minimizing its ecological footprint and embracing artisanal craftsmanship, Aurva Illam stands as a powerful example of how modern design can honor and draw inspiration from its geological and cultural surroundings, proving that sustainable living can be both beautiful and deeply rooted.
