Hampstead Passive House: Victorian Gem Retrofitted for Ultra-Low Energy Living

GS Architecture has successfully transformed a Victorian semi-detached home in Hampstead, London, into a high-performance Passivhaus dwelling. Employing a 'fabric-first' approach, the studio prioritized a super-insulated, airtight building envelope, complemented by high-performance glazing and a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system. This rigorous methodology drastically reduces energy consumption for heating and cooling, ensuring exceptional comfort and stable internal temperatures year-round. The project meticulously balances the preservation of the original Victorian character with the integration of modern sustainable technologies. Beyond significant energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint, the renovation enhances indoor air quality and occupant well-being, creating a light-filled, healthy, and comfortable living environment. Hampstead Passive House stands as a prime example of how existing building stock can be retrofitted to meet stringent environmental standards, offering a scalable model for sustainable urban development.
