Gehry Partners, WHY Architecture and Olin Selected to Transform Getty Center Tram Station

The Getty Center in Los Angeles has officially announced a collaborative renovation project for its primary visitor tram station, enlisting the expertise of Gehry Partners, WHY Architecture, and the landscape firm Olin. This ambitious project aims to modernize the visitor arrival sequence, which serves as the essential gateway for millions of guests traveling to the hilltop museum. A highlight of the proposed design is a parametric glass canopy to be created by Gehry Partners, designed to provide a sophisticated shelter while harmonizing with the surrounding Southern California topography. By integrating the human-centric design approach of WHY Architecture and the landscape mastery of Olin, the Getty intends to improve operational flow, security, and accessibility. This project marks a significant architectural evolution for the site, bridging its original 1990s design legacy with modern, sustainable, and sculptural innovation. As the institution looks toward its next three decades, this revitalization ensures that the Getty Center remains at the forefront of the global museum experience, seamlessly guiding visitors from the urban landscape into the quiet, elevated space of the campus.
