Historic School in Utrecht Transformed into Modern Judiciary Training Hub by i29 and DP6

In an exemplary display of adaptive reuse, design studios i29 and DP6 have revitalized a 20th-century school building in Utrecht, converting it into a specialized training facility for the Dutch Judiciary and the Public Prosecution Service. Known as Courthouse Building H, the four-storey structure serves as a case study in balancing historical preservation with modern functional demands. The architects prioritized the retention of the original mid-century structural elements, exposing raw materials to preserve the building’s narrative while integrating high-tech, modular learning spaces that foster transparency and efficiency. This project underscores the growing importance of sustainable architecture, highlighting how repurposing existing infrastructure can lower carbon footprints while creating meaningful, character-rich public spaces. By successfully bridging the gap between a past educational purpose and a high-level legal future, i29 and DP6 have provided a compelling model for future urban development that respects institutional heritage while embracing modern standards of sustainability and professional excellence.
