Design Student Creates 'Immersion' Timer to Fight Digital Distraction

In response to the increasing prevalence of smartphone-induced attention fragmentation, product design student Carrie Lee has developed the 'Immersion' timer. This minimalist, tactile device is specifically engineered to support deep work by stripping away the notification-heavy, gamified interfaces found on modern smartphones. Inspired by the nostalgia of 90s-era digital technology, Lee's prototype offers a singular, dedicated focus tool that acts as a physical barrier against digital fatigue. By removing the connectivity and constant interruptions associated with mobile apps, the device allows users to set intervals for concentrated effort without the risk of distraction. This project highlights a growing shift toward intentional, low-tech solutions in design, prioritizing utility and user focus over complex, dopamine-triggering software architectures. The device serves as a testament to how simple, purpose-driven hardware can reclaim personal focus in an era of constant connectivity.
