Charlap Hyman & Herrero Designs New York Fragrance Store as a "Place of Pause"

US firm Charlap Hyman & Herrero has designed a unique fragrance boutique, Nonfiction, on Manhattan's Lower East Side, envisioned as a "place of pause." Founder Haeyoung Cha collaborated with the designers to create a space that reflects the vibrant neighbourhood while evoking the brand's South Korean origins. The store's interior boldly juxtaposes high-gloss red ceramic tiles with elegant Queen Anne-style furniture, creating a visually striking and sensory-rich environment. This deliberate contrast aims to offer a serene counterpoint to the urban hustle, encouraging visitors to slow down and engage with the fragrances. The design prioritizes a curated, unhurried customer journey, blending historical references with contemporary aesthetics. By focusing on atmosphere and comfort, the store provides a restorative retail experience, setting a new precedent for mindful consumption and experiential design in the competitive fragrance market. It transforms a retail space into a destination for contemplation and sensory discovery.
