Bangkok Residence Wraps Around Lush Courtyard with Recessed Roof

In a quiet Bangkok neighborhood, a private residence redefines indoor-outdoor living by organizing its layout around a lush, planted courtyard. The property actually comprises two structures—an older home and a newly added volume—that together embrace this central green space as a shared landscape. Rather than treating the courtyard as a mere decorative gap, the design makes it the functional and visual heart of the compound, allowing both the original and new buildings to open onto the same natural focal point. The most distinctive architectural gesture is the recessed roof, which visually lowers the new structure’s mass and helps the home feel more grounded within its leafy setting. This stepped-back roofline also enhances the sense of enclosure around the courtyard, drawing the eye downward and inward toward the planting. The result is a composition that prioritizes calm, shade, and a continuous dialogue between architecture and vegetation. The project was recently featured by Des.
