Patricia Urquiola Crafts Nest-Like Alpine Sanctuaries at Andermatt's Maya Residences

The newly completed Maya apartment complex in Andermatt, Switzerland, offers a masterclass in contextual design. By blending the architectural foundation of Swiss-Czech architect Miroslav Šik with the immersive interior design of Patricia Urquiola, the project creates a unique residential experience. Urquiola’s 'nest-like' interiors utilize locally sourced wood and stone to mirror the surrounding Alpine landscape, fostering an environment of comfort and seclusion. Comprising 17 residences, the project signals a move away from the cold, sterile luxury of the past toward a more sustainable, tactile approach. By focusing on natural materials, warm lighting, and layouts that prioritize a sense of protection from the harsh elements, the design team has successfully bridged the gap between modern architectural requirements and the rugged reality of high-altitude living. This project underscores a global shift in luxury real estate, where residents increasingly prioritize wellness and a deep, grounded connection to their environment over ostentatious displays of wealth.
