AI Agents Can Now Pay Visa and Mastercard—But Disputes Are Impossible, Says GenLayer Labs

Visa and Mastercard have entered the top governance tier of x402, the emerging payment standard for AI agents, giving the card networks control over how autonomous systems transact online. Albert Castellana, co-founder of GenLayer Labs, warns that x402 currently lacks any chargeback or dispute mechanism, meaning if an AI agent pays for a product or service and receives something wrong, useless, or fraudulent, the payment is final. This is a critical gap as AI agents begin making purchases without human oversight, from booking travel to buying digital goods. Castellana explains that the standard was designed for speed and efficiency, not accountability, and that integrating dispute resolution would require rethinking how trust and verification work in machine-to-machine commerce. The involvement of Visa and Mastercard signals mainstream adoption, but also raises questions about whether traditional financial safeguards can be adapted to agentic transactions. Without a way to reverse erroneous payments, businesses and consumers may hesitate to delegate spending authority to AI. The next phase of x402 development will likely focus on building reputation systems or escrow-like mechanisms to address this vulnerability, but for now, the rise of agentic payments outpaces its own safety rails.
