Mara Brock Akil & Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove: Media Narratives Crucial for Black Maternal Health Policy

At a pivotal April 18th event hosted by In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, acclaimed producer Mara Brock Akil and Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove highlighted the critical link between media storytelling and policy solutions for the Black maternal health crisis. Akil emphasized creators' responsibility to craft authentic narratives that humanize Black women's experiences, challenging stereotypes and fostering empathy. Kamlager-Dove stressed that media perceptions directly influence the political will needed for legislative action. The discussion underscored how nuanced storytelling can expose systemic inequities, drive public support for policy changes like expanded healthcare access and implicit bias training, and ultimately advocate for improved outcomes. Both leaders called for continued collaboration between media creators and policymakers to ensure Black maternal health becomes a national priority and to build a future where Black mothers and children can thrive, bridging the gap between awareness and tangible reform.
