CATL Advances 20 Ah Solid-State EV Batteries, Targeting 500 Wh/kg and 2027 Production

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, has achieved a new milestone in solid-state battery development with 20 ampere-hour (Ah) cells. This progress moves the company closer to its goal of small-scale production by 2027. CATL is also targeting an energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg), which would significantly surpass current lithium-ion batteries that typically range from 250 to 300 Wh/kg. Higher energy density means electric vehicles could travel much farther on a single charge, addressing range anxiety and accelerating EV adoption. Solid-state batteries also promise improved safety by replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with solid materials. CATL’s advancement signals that solid-state technology is moving from lab to commercialization, with potential ripple effects across the automotive and energy storage industries. Competitors like Toyota, QuantumScape, and Samsung SDI are also racing to develop solid-state batteries, but CATL’s scale and manufacturing expertise could give it a critical edge. As the company refines its 20 Ah cells and scales up production, the next few years will be pivotal in determining whether solid-state batteries can meet cost and reliability targets for mass-market EVs. For consumers and automakers, this milestone brings the promise of safer, longer-range electric vehicles one step closer to reality.
