2027 Fiat Topolino Gains U.S. Street-Legal Status as Low-Speed Vehicle

The 2027 Fiat Topolino, a tiny electric quadricycle already popular in Europe, will finally be street-legal in the United States—but with a significant catch. Fiat has confirmed the Topolino will be classified as a low-speed vehicle (LSV), meaning it can only operate on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less. This classification severely limits its usability for American drivers, confining the Topolino to neighborhoods, campuses, and urban cores rather than highways or major thoroughfares. The move comes as Stellantis, Fiat's parent company, seeks to expand its micro-mobility offerings in North America amid growing demand for compact EVs. The Topolino, named after the original 1936 Fiat 500 'little mouse,' features a 5.5-kWh battery, a range of about 47 miles, and a top speed of 28 mph—well within LSV parameters. Its retro-modern design and open-air configuration have drawn attention, but the LSV label means it will compete with golf carts and neighborhood electric vehicles rather than mainstream cars. Fiat has not yet announced pricing for the U.S. market, though European models start around €9,890. For city dwellers seeking a stylish, emissions-free runabout, the Topolino offers charm and practicality—if they can live within its speed limits.
